The great adventures of Jake and Mimi and celebrating and the 4th of July!

An extra-long post for you today covering the last couple of weeks in and out of Austin.

We had our first visitor in Austin. My mom came to check out our new hometown, help celebrate my birthday and most importantly to spend the weekend with Jake while Alex and I went back to DC for a wedding.

I was so happy to have a very laid-back Austin style birthday and was really happy to spend it with Alex, Jake and my mom. I took the day off and my mom and I explored South Austin and picked up Jake early from school and hung out for a bit at the pool. That night we all went out to a really fun dinner at Iron Cactus, for our DC friends think Rosa Mexicano. Jake really liked the birthday dessert.

When I first announced that I was pregnant with Jake one of the things that was immediately discussed with our parents was what did they want to be called. My mom chose Grammy but apparently it isn't up to her. The grandparent formerly known as Grammy will now be known as Mimi. We're still in discussion on whether it is Mimi or Me-me.

The morning after my birthday we were off to DC and Jake and Mimi had a great time and did all sorts of cool things despite how hot it was. Good thing Mimi is a trained professional when it comes to kid stuff. How many Grandmas make play dough on a regular basis?

They spent lots of time going on walks and Jake rode around the neighborhood on his truck, they played and read a ton and even ventured out into the real world outside of our apartment.

Jake and the bath seem to have a temperamental relationship. Sometimes he loves it and sometimes he hates it. Thanks to a little creative thinking he loves it again!
With a clean and happy baby we headed to Houston on Friday to enjoy the long 4th of July weekend. We stayed with our friends Lisa and Jon and their two boys and as always enjoyed being with them. Their four year old son, Drew, was cute as ever looking out for "Jakey" and always making sure he knew where he was. We also got to spend a little time with Jessica, Danny and Jonah. We even got to go out without any kids for a great dinner!

On the 4th we spent the day at Alex's Uncle Ken and Aunt Loretta's house and with his cousins Brenna, Philip, Michael, Josh and Talia Vivier. We were also happy to spend more time with Todd and Melanie who we met at Michael's Bar Mitzvah when they bonded as UGA fans. Jake was of course a hit particularly with his cousin Talia.

When we got back to Austin we had a little downtime before we went out for a haircut and to meet friends Patricia and Pete and their three girls. Jake had a good time with "the guys". My grandma sent him a Big Bird doll and since then we've (and Mimi) added to the collection. We now have (as Jake calls them) Big, Elmo, Ea-knee, Me (Grover), Dado (his word for cookies and Cookie Monster, and Abby. We're looking out for Bit (Bert) and Ottar (Oscar).

Sweet ride, sweet haircut, sweet boy!
