The Generations Tour

Jake is lucky enough to have two-great grandmothers and several great-great aunts and uncles including one who just turned 100! On Wednesday, Alex took Jake and I to the airport to start our 2008 Midwest Generations Tour!

First stop: Chicago
We were only in Chicago for literally 24 hours but we made good use of the time. My mom (Grammy) and Aunt Judy picked us up from the airport. Grammy couldn't wait to see Jake, coming into the airport to "help" me with the bag, stroller, etc. Except when she came in I ended up with the bags and she took the baby. :)

Once we got back to my Grandma's we had some lunch (I of course had to have my grandma's famous grilled cheese), watched Jake play with some new toys courtesy of Grammy and Ruthie the Great, walked around the mall, listened to Jake's first concert and had some really good Chinese take-out. It was really fun just hanging out!

Check out Grammy & Jake playing, Jake & Aunt Judy, and Great-Grandma Ruthe & Jake:

You may remember a previous post where Jake was playing his little piano, here he is with the real thing!

Next stop: Detroit
Jake and I said goodbye to everyone in Chicago and hopped on a quick flight to Detroit to meet up with my dad's family and to celebrate our Uncle Earl's 100th birthday! I was there for Uncle Earl's 90th birthday and wasn't about to miss his big 100th birthday and the chance to introduce Jake to Uncle Earl, Aunt Sylvia, and the rest of my dad's cousins.

Jake and Uncle Earl meet!

The Davidson Family - 4 generations

We celebrated Uncle Earl's actual birthday on July 3rd with a family dinner, cake, and making toasts to Uncle Earl (and a few to Jake as well) with Vodka my dad brought back from the Ukraine, where Uncle Earl and my Grandma Belle came from. I'm glad they liked it but with the exception of Earl and my dad the consensus was that it was pretty nasty. I sure hope I'm doing shots at 100!

Jake with his Auntie Sandy and Auntie Carol:

The 4th was pretty quiet with time at the hotel and dinner again with the family. It was nice to show Jake around to the others in the community where Earl and Sylvia live. They all loved seeing the baby. My favorite was when one woman came up to us and said in a heavy European accent, "Hees such a leetle butter ball".

Another fun part of the trip was the hotel pool! Neither Alex or I are big pool people (except for me on vacation), so this was Jake's first time swimming. Thanks to his god-mommy, Libby, he was all ready to go with his cute little swim trunks.

Jake tries the swimming thing while mommy cheers him on:

Grandpa keeps Jake warm after the pool:

I think Jake liked the pool. I wouldn't say he loved it, but he didn't 'hate it'. The next morning my dad's cousins Carol, Sandy, and Jim came to swim with Jake. Sandy taught her own kids to swim and gave Jake his first lesson and first dunk underwater. He did great!

It was a really nice trip and we were glad that we got to see so many family members in such a short time. But after the trip we were glad when Alex picked us up at the airport and our little family was back together again!
