My Saturday with Jake (and no mom to help)

With Becca off to Southern Maryland to hang with Andie & Steffi for Steffi's baby shower, I was tasked with my longest consecutive Jake duty with no Becca to help. I would give myself about a C-.

Becca fed Jake right before she left around 8:30 in the morning, so I thought I was "safe" for 3 hours before the 'freak out' started when Jake would need his first post mom feeding. Well, I miscalculated.

The "Jake alarm" went off around an hour later and I didn't want to feed him yet, so I packed Jake into his carrier and off we went (I have found the car and the hum of the road as my one surefire of way of calming a fussy baby) and I decided once he calmed down during the ride, I MIGHT have enough time to head to the grocery and try and fill an empty fridge. Jake was great for the first part of the shopping and then the "Jake alarm" went off & a really slow checkout lady at Safeway didn't help matters.

(and for the record, the prices at the grocery these days did not help my mood!)

The car ride back didn't change a thing. I finally gave in and gave Jake his first bottle at 10:30 and got some temporary relief.

Of course, by around 12:15, slightly more than an hour after finishing the bottle, the "Jake alarm" went off again, and with my futile attempts thwarted by an unhappy baby, I gave Jake a smaller bottle to calm him - it worked for a good ten minutes. With Jake still unhappy, we went back in the car again for a good 20 minutes until he finally went to sleep.

(and I did check, there was no temperature nor did his diaper need changing, the whole time!)

Of course, just over an hour later, Jake woke up, more fussy than ever, so the desperate dad that I was, I went back for a third bottle. He was WELL fed at this point, but he still wouldn't go to sleep! So, back to the car we went to get some more temporary relief. At this point, I was so worn out that when I spied a Baskin Robbins, I had to get some ice cream.

We got back to the house and Jake's sleep was again, very temporary, so I gave in after a while and between 3 & 4 PM, Jake got his 4th bottle. After that, well, there wasn't much relief until mommy finally came back from the shower around 5:00 PM.

It's not my first time alone with Jake for so many hours, nor will it be my last. But Jake made sure it was a very memorable day for his overmatched daddy.

Alex, I am sorry to hear you had such a tough day. Thanks for loaning Becca to us.

I must say this post made me laugh. It sounds like you spent the whole day feeding him and driving him around!! Looks like he's got you figured out. :-)

Steph, I was happy to loan Becca out and if anything Jake gave me a good topic to post on the Blog about! :-)

Alex, That was a real hoot...very creative and very funny. If it makes you feel better, I remember driving Becca around to get her to sleep also...no such problem now, I am sure.
Thanks for the laugh and the blog.

Carole,

That's good to know and somehow, it doesn't surprise me that Becca needed her fair share of car trips. Like mother, like son!
